What is the Covalent MCP Server?

Integrate Covalent, the unified API for blockchain data, directly into your AI workflow. Access real-time and historical data across Ethereum, Polygon, Binance Smart Chain, and over 100 other supported networks using natural language.

What you can do

  • Wallet Insights — Retrieve token balances, historical portfolio values, and transaction history for any wallet address.
  • NFT Discovery — List NFT balances and metadata across supported chains.
  • Transaction Auditing — Get full details and log events for specific transaction hashes.
  • Network Monitoring — Check block details and monitor supported chain statuses.

How it works

  1. Connect the Covalent integration to your AI assistant.
  2. Authorize using your Covalent API Key (found in your dashboard at covalenthq.com).
  3. Query global blockchain data through intuitive conversation.

Who is this for?

  • Web3 Developers — Quickly audit smart contract interactions and verify transaction logs.
  • Crypto Investors — Track portfolio performance and monitor wallet activities across multiple chains.
  • Data Analysts — Retrieve structured on-chain data for research and reporting via chat.

Why Cursor?

Cursor's Agent mode turns Covalent into an in-editor superpower. Ask Cursor to generate code using live data from Covalent and it fetches, processes, and writes. all in a single agentic loop. 10 tools appear alongside file editing and terminal access, creating a unified development environment grounded in real-time information.

  • Agent mode turns Cursor into an autonomous coding assistant that can read files, run commands, and call MCP tools without switching context

  • Cursor's Composer feature can generate entire files using real-time data fetched through MCP. no copy-pasting from external dashboards

  • MCP tools appear alongside built-in tools like file reading and terminal access, creating a unified agentic environment

  • VS Code extension compatibility means your existing workflow, keybindings, and extensions all work alongside MCP tools

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

How do I get a Covalent API Key?

Log in to your Covalent dashboard at covalenthq.com and generate an API Key. You can use the free tier to get started.

02

Which blockchains are supported?

Covalent supports over 100 chains including Ethereum, Polygon, BSC, Avalanche, Fantom, and many Layer 2 solutions like Arbitrum and Optimism.

03

Can the agent send transactions?

No, this integration is for querying data only. It provides high-granularity visibility into on-chain activities but cannot execute writes or sign transactions.

04

What is Agent mode and why does it matter for MCP?

Agent mode is Cursor's autonomous execution mode where the AI can perform multi-step tasks: reading files, editing code, running terminal commands, and calling MCP tools. Without Agent mode, Cursor operates in a simpler ask-and-answer mode that doesn't support tool calling. Always ensure you're in Agent mode when working with MCP servers.

05

Where does Cursor store MCP configuration?

Cursor looks for MCP server configurations in a mcp.json file. You can configure servers at the project level (.cursor/mcp.json in your project root) or globally (~/.cursor/mcp.json). Project-level configs take precedence.

06

Can Cursor use MCP tools in inline edits?

No. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode through the chat panel. Inline completions and Tab suggestions do not trigger MCP tool calls. This is by design. tool calls require user visibility and approval.

07

How do I verify MCP tools are loaded?

Open Settings → Features → MCP and look for your server name. A green indicator means the server is connected. You can also check Agent mode's available tools by clicking the tools dropdown in the chat panel.

08

Tools not appearing in Cursor

Ensure you are in Agent mode (not Ask mode). MCP tools only work in Agent mode.

09

Server shows as disconnected

Check Settings → Features → MCP and verify the server status. Try clicking the refresh button.
