n8n (AI Workflow Automation)

What is the n8n (AI Workflow Automation) MCP Server?

Connect your n8n instance to any AI agent and take full control of your node-based workflow automation, execution diagnostics, and project orchestration through natural conversation.

What you can do

  • Workflow Orchestration — List all managed automation workflows and retrieve detailed JSON logic nodes, including link mappings and trigger configurations directly from your agent
  • Execution Diagnostics — Extract historical execution logs to track success/failure boundaries and retrieve absolute trace logs for rapid debugging of automation failures
  • Node-Level Inspection — Deep-dive into specific execution IDs to extract bounded node-level output blocks and identify exact processing errors natively
  • Credential Audit — List metadata mapping saved automation credentials to verify system types and IDs without exposing literal secure tokens
  • Collaborative Visibility — Enumerate provisioned team users and assigned roles to verify access targets across your n8n infrastructure securely
  • Organizational Tags — List arbitrary category tags used to group and sort complex workflow logic dimensions across your automation workspace
  • Metadata Inspection — Retrieve precise graph representations for specific workflows to understand the underlying logic and data transformation flows instantly

How it works

  1. Subscribe to this server
  2. Enter your n8n Base URL and API Key
  3. Start managing your automation node from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible client

Who is this for?

  • Automation Engineers — verify workflow designs and debug execution failures through natural conversation without manual dashboard navigation
  • Software Developers — test node-based automation logic and retrieve execution traces directly from your workspace terminal
  • IT Operations Teams — monitor automation health and audit credential mappings across multiple n8n instances efficiently

Why Cursor?

Cursor's Agent mode turns n8n (AI Workflow Automation) into an in-editor superpower. Ask Cursor to generate code using live data from n8n (AI Workflow Automation) and it fetches, processes, and writes. all in a single agentic loop. 7 tools appear alongside file editing and terminal access, creating a unified development environment grounded in real-time information.

  • Agent mode turns Cursor into an autonomous coding assistant that can read files, run commands, and call MCP tools without switching context

  • Cursor's Composer feature can generate entire files using real-time data fetched through MCP. no copy-pasting from external dashboards

  • MCP tools appear alongside built-in tools like file reading and terminal access, creating a unified agentic environment

  • VS Code extension compatibility means your existing workflow, keybindings, and extensions all work alongside MCP tools

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

Does this work with self-hosted n8n instances?

Yes. You just need to provide your full n8n Base URL (e.g., https://n8n.your-company.com). Your agent will connect securely to your private instance using your n8n API Key.

02

Can I see exactly why an n8n execution failed through my agent?

Yes. Use the get_execution tool with a specific Execution ID. Your agent will retrieve the node-level trace logs, allowing you to see which specific node encountered an error and the resulting output payload for that step.

03

Can my agent list the automation credentials saved in my n8n account?

Absolutely. Use the list_credentials tool to identify all stored auth hooks. Your agent will report the credential names and system types (e.g., Slack, GitHub), helping you audit your integrations without exposing literal secure tokens.

04

What is Agent mode and why does it matter for MCP?

Agent mode is Cursor's autonomous execution mode where the AI can perform multi-step tasks: reading files, editing code, running terminal commands, and calling MCP tools. Without Agent mode, Cursor operates in a simpler ask-and-answer mode that doesn't support tool calling. Always ensure you're in Agent mode when working with MCP servers.

05

Where does Cursor store MCP configuration?

Cursor looks for MCP server configurations in a mcp.json file. You can configure servers at the project level (.cursor/mcp.json in your project root) or globally (~/.cursor/mcp.json). Project-level configs take precedence.

06

Can Cursor use MCP tools in inline edits?

No. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode through the chat panel. Inline completions and Tab suggestions do not trigger MCP tool calls. This is by design. tool calls require user visibility and approval.

07

How do I verify MCP tools are loaded?

Open Settings → Features → MCP and look for your server name. A green indicator means the server is connected. You can also check Agent mode's available tools by clicking the tools dropdown in the chat panel.

08

Tools not appearing in Cursor

Ensure you are in Agent mode (not Ask mode). MCP tools only work in Agent mode.
