What is the IPinfo MCP Server?
Empower your AI agent to orchestrate your entire IP intelligence and network auditing workflow with IPinfo, the world's most trusted source for IP data. By connecting IPinfo to your agent, you transform complex network lookups into a natural conversation. Your agent can instantly geolocate IP addresses, audit ASN details, and retrieve privacy metadata without you ever touching a terminal. Whether you are conducting security research or monitoring user traffic, your agent acts as a real-time network analyst, ensuring your intelligence is always grounded in precise, high-fidelity data.
What you can do
- IP Auditing — Query geographic details for any IP address and retrieve city, region, and ISP information instantly.
- ASN Oversight — Identify Autonomous System Numbers (ASN) to maintain a clear view of network ownership and routing.
- Privacy Intelligence — Check if an IP address is associated with a VPN, proxy, or Tor node to audit traffic authenticity.
- Network Discovery — Retrieve metadata for entire IP ranges or CIDR blocks to understand regional allocations.
- Operational Monitoring — Query your own server IP details to maintain strict control over your connection environment.
How it works
- Subscribe to this server
- Enter your IPinfo Access Token
- Start managing your network intelligence through Claude, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible client
Who is this for?
- Security Researchers — monitor malicious IPs and retrieve threat intelligence metadata straight from your workflow.
- Data Engineers — verify user geolocation and audit network routing for optimized performance.
- Risk Managers — perform rapid audits of IP privacy settings and identify proxy usage through natural language.
- Operations Leads — automate network data querying to orchestrate cross-functional infrastructure teams smoothly.
Built-in capabilities (6)
Get details for an Autonomous System Number (ASN)
Get full geographic and network details for an IP address
Get historical data for an IP (Requires appropriate plan)
Get details for an IP range or CIDR
Get details for the current server IP
Check if an IP is using a VPN, proxy, or Tor
Why VS Code Copilot?
GitHub Copilot Agent mode brings IPinfo data directly into your VS Code workflow. With a project-scoped config, the entire team shares access to 6 tools. Copilot queries live data, generates typed code, and writes tests from actual API responses, all without leaving the editor.
- —
VS Code is used by over 70% of developers. adding MCP tools to Copilot means your team can leverage external data without leaving their primary editor
- —
Project-scoped MCP configs (
.vscode/mcp.json) let you commit server configurations to your repository, ensuring the entire team shares the same tool access - —
Copilot's Agent mode integrates MCP tools seamlessly with file editing, terminal commands, and workspace search in a single agentic loop
- —
GitHub's enterprise compliance and audit features extend to MCP tool usage, providing visibility into how AI interacts with external services

Frequently asked questions
How do I find my IPinfo Access Token?
Log in to your IPinfo dashboard, and you will find your Access Token on the overview page. Copy and paste it below.
Does the agent detect VPNs and Proxies?
Yes. The get_privacy_details tool allows your agent to identify if an IP address is masked by a VPN, proxy, or Tor network instantly.
Is ASN information provided for all IPs?
Yes. IPinfo provides comprehensive ASN metadata for any IP address, helping you audit the network provider and routing hierarchy.
Which VS Code version supports MCP?
MCP support requires VS Code 1.99 or later with the GitHub Copilot extension. Ensure both are updated to the latest version. Older versions of Copilot may not expose the Agent mode toggle.
How do I switch to Agent mode?
Open the Copilot Chat panel and look for two mode options: "Ask" and "Agent". Click "Agent" to enable autonomous tool calling. In Ask mode, Copilot provides conversational answers but cannot invoke MCP tools.
Can I restrict which MCP tools Copilot can access?
Yes. VS Code shows a tool consent dialog before any MCP tool is invoked for the first time. You can also configure tool access policies at the organization level through GitHub Copilot settings.
Does MCP work in VS Code Remote or Codespaces?
Yes. MCP servers configured via .vscode/mcp.json work in Remote SSH, WSL, and GitHub Codespaces environments. The MCP connection is established from the remote host, so ensure the server URL is accessible from that environment.
MCP tools not available
Ensure you are in Agent mode in Copilot Chat. MCP tools only appear in Agent mode.
