What is the Appwrite MCP Server?

Empower your AI agent to orchestrate your entire backend infrastructure with Appwrite. This unified server provides your agent with instant access to database management, user authentication auditing, and cloud storage monitoring. Your agent can instantly list your databases, audit document collections, and retrieve storage metrics without you ever touching the Appwrite console. Whether you are monitoring cloud function executions or managing project health, your agent acts as a dedicated backend developer through natural conversation.

What you can do

  • Database Auditing — List all databases and collections, and retrieve documents to analyze data structures.
  • User Management — List and inspect project users to monitor registration trends and account statuses.
  • Storage Monitoring — Access storage buckets and list files to audit assets and media distribution.
  • Function Insights — Monitor cloud function configurations and retrieve recent execution logs for debugging.
  • System Health — Get real-time health status for all integrated Appwrite services within your project.

How it works

  1. Subscribe to this server
  2. Enter your Appwrite Project ID, API Key, and Endpoint
  3. Start managing your backend infrastructure from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible client

Who is this for?

  • Full-stack Developers — instantly retrieve database schemas and audit users during the development cycle.
  • Backend Engineers — automate infrastructure checks and monitor function executions through natural language.
  • Operations Managers — track project health and storage usage without technical console logins.
  • SaaS Operators — integrate Appwrite workflows into internal tools via an AI-guided interface.
  • Product Owners — monitor user registration activity and database growth for organizational planning.

Why Cursor?

Cursor's Agent mode turns Appwrite into an in-editor superpower. Ask Cursor to generate code using live data from Appwrite and it fetches, processes, and writes. all in a single agentic loop. 9 tools appear alongside file editing and terminal access, creating a unified development environment grounded in real-time information.

  • Agent mode turns Cursor into an autonomous coding assistant that can read files, run commands, and call MCP tools without switching context

  • Cursor's Composer feature can generate entire files using real-time data fetched through MCP. no copy-pasting from external dashboards

  • MCP tools appear alongside built-in tools like file reading and terminal access, creating a unified agentic environment

  • VS Code extension compatibility means your existing workflow, keybindings, and extensions all work alongside MCP tools

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

How do I list all users in my Appwrite project?

Use the list_users tool. It retrieves a comprehensive list of all registered users, allowing you to audit account statuses and registration activity.

02

Can I see the data within a specific collection?

Yes! Use the list_documents tool by providing the Database ID and Collection ID. Your agent will fetch the documents stored in that collection for auditing and analysis.

03

How do I check if my Appwrite services are running correctly?

Use the get_health_status tool. It provides a real-time overview of the health of various system components, ensuring your infrastructure is operational.

04

What is Agent mode and why does it matter for MCP?

Agent mode is Cursor's autonomous execution mode where the AI can perform multi-step tasks: reading files, editing code, running terminal commands, and calling MCP tools. Without Agent mode, Cursor operates in a simpler ask-and-answer mode that doesn't support tool calling. Always ensure you're in Agent mode when working with MCP servers.

05

Where does Cursor store MCP configuration?

Cursor looks for MCP server configurations in a mcp.json file. You can configure servers at the project level (.cursor/mcp.json in your project root) or globally (~/.cursor/mcp.json). Project-level configs take precedence.

06

Can Cursor use MCP tools in inline edits?

No. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode through the chat panel. Inline completions and Tab suggestions do not trigger MCP tool calls. This is by design. tool calls require user visibility and approval.

07

How do I verify MCP tools are loaded?

Open Settings → Features → MCP and look for your server name. A green indicator means the server is connected. You can also check Agent mode's available tools by clicking the tools dropdown in the chat panel.

08

Tools not appearing in Cursor

Ensure you are in Agent mode (not Ask mode). MCP tools only work in Agent mode.

09
