What is the ArcGIS MCP Server?
Connect your ArcGIS account to any AI agent and take full control of your location and spatial intelligence through natural conversation.
What you can do
- Geocoding & Reverse Geocoding — Convert street addresses to coordinates instantly or discover the closest address to a specific longitude/latitude pair
- Batch Geocoding — Process bulk batches of up to 1000 geographical addresses in a single AI operation
- Route Solving — Calculate the optimal route between multiple stops, complete with turn-by-turn directions, travel time, and precise distances
- Vehicle Routing — Solve complex Vehicle Routing Problems (VRP) to optimize fleets and logistics deliveries
- Service Area Analysis — Calculate drive-time, walk-time, or travel-distance polygons reachable from a specific facility
- Origin-Destination Matrices — Compute travel constraints and cost matrices between multiple origins and tracking destinations
How it works
- Subscribe to this server
- Enter your ArcGIS Developer API Key
- Start exploring and calculating spatial data from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible client
No more switching tabs to specialized GIS dashboards. Your AI agent acts as a fully integrated geoprocessing command center.
Who is this for?
- Logistics teams — optimize fleet routes, trace deliveries, and calculate exact driving times without leaving your operations workflow
- Retail businesses — map out service areas and understand the geographic reach of your new store locations
- Real estate agents — automate batch address queries and enrich property listings with hyper-local context
- Data scientists — clean and resolve coordinate anomalies using the powerful ArcGIS suggestion engine
Built-in capabilities (10)
Addresses must be provided as an ArcGIS-compatible JSON array string. Geocode a bulk batch of up to 1000 addresses
Calculate travel time and distances between multiple origins and destinations
Facilities specified as lon, lat. Calculate drive-time, walk-time, or travel-distance service areas
Use this to turn text addresses into latitude and longitude. Find an address or place using ArcGIS Geocoding
g., USA, BRA, FRA). Ensures results are geographically bounded. Find an address filtered by a specific country
Coordinate format must be lon,lat (e.g. -117.19,34.05). Discover the closest address to a specific location (lon, lat)
Point sequence must be provided as lon, lat;lon, lat. Returns detailed turn-by-turn directions, travel time, and distance. Find the best route between two or more locations
Takes an ArcGIS Orders JSON mapping string detailing the stops. Solve a Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) for a fleet
Use this to help users select valid addresses before performing a full geocode request. Get autocomplete suggestions for partial addresses or place names
Get autocomplete suggestions biased towards a specific location
Why VS Code Copilot?
GitHub Copilot Agent mode brings ArcGIS data directly into your VS Code workflow. With a project-scoped config, the entire team shares access to 10 tools. Copilot queries live data, generates typed code, and writes tests from actual API responses, all without leaving the editor.
- —
VS Code is used by over 70% of developers. adding MCP tools to Copilot means your team can leverage external data without leaving their primary editor
- —
Project-scoped MCP configs (
.vscode/mcp.json) let you commit server configurations to your repository, ensuring the entire team shares the same tool access - —
Copilot's Agent mode integrates MCP tools seamlessly with file editing, terminal commands, and workspace search in a single agentic loop
- —
GitHub's enterprise compliance and audit features extend to MCP tool usage, providing visibility into how AI interacts with external services

Frequently asked questions
Can my AI agent process a spreadsheet of hundreds of addresses into coordinates automatically?
Yes. Simply share an array or JSON of addresses, and your agent can use the batch geocoding tool to process up to 1000 records in a single API call, returning precise latitude and longitude faster than any manual lookup.
How can I figure out the optimal driving route between 5 delivery stops?
Share the coordinates of your multiple stops (lon, lat) with your AI agent. It utilizes the ArcGIS route solving engine to compute the fastest sequential path and returns a detailed breakdown of turn-by-turn directions and exact travel estimates.
Can I search for a location but strictly within a particular country?
Absolutely. You can request the agent to geocode a place and pass a specific ISO country code (e.g., FRA for France, USA for United States). This ensures your spatial results are strictly bounded to that region, ideal for local datasets.
Which VS Code version supports MCP?
MCP support requires VS Code 1.99 or later with the GitHub Copilot extension. Ensure both are updated to the latest version. Older versions of Copilot may not expose the Agent mode toggle.
How do I switch to Agent mode?
Open the Copilot Chat panel and look for two mode options: "Ask" and "Agent". Click "Agent" to enable autonomous tool calling. In Ask mode, Copilot provides conversational answers but cannot invoke MCP tools.
Can I restrict which MCP tools Copilot can access?
Yes. VS Code shows a tool consent dialog before any MCP tool is invoked for the first time. You can also configure tool access policies at the organization level through GitHub Copilot settings.
Does MCP work in VS Code Remote or Codespaces?
Yes. MCP servers configured via .vscode/mcp.json work in Remote SSH, WSL, and GitHub Codespaces environments. The MCP connection is established from the remote host, so ensure the server URL is accessible from that environment.
MCP tools not available
Ensure you are in Agent mode in Copilot Chat. MCP tools only appear in Agent mode.
