What is the Canto MCP Server?
Connect your Canto Digital Asset Management (DAM) account to any AI agent and take full control of your media library through natural conversation.
What you can do
- Folders & Directories — List and create robust structural boundaries directly inside your Canto workspace.
- Album Orchestration — Enumerate active albums and generate new collections to dynamically gather related assets.
- Asset Metadata — Analyze specific image properties, inspect EXIF parameters, and perform automated metadata validation and rewrites.
- Global Media Search — Tap into raw status configurations to perform a deep search across all your Canto folders without manual navigation loops.
- File Management — Assign precise assets to specific UI albums to prevent orphaned storage clusters, or cleanly wipe obsolete data from the live database.
How it works
- Subscribe to this server
- Enter your Canto Domain and API Access Token
- Start querying, tagging, and organizing digital media directly from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible intelligence hub
Who is this for?
- Marketing & Brand Teams — Quickly search for brand assets, mass-tag images with updated campaigns, and organize event photography from a chat window.
- Content Creators — Organize deliverables into structured albums automatically and update EXIF data efficiently.
- Product Teams — Keep an updated repository of product mockups, assigning and tracking visual iterations seamlessly using AI agents.

Why VS Code Copilot?
GitHub Copilot Agent mode brings Canto data directly into your VS Code workflow. With a project-scoped config, the entire team shares access to 10 tools. Copilot queries live data, generates typed code, and writes tests from actual API responses, all without leaving the editor.
- —
VS Code is used by over 70% of developers. adding MCP tools to Copilot means your team can leverage external data without leaving their primary editor
- —
Project-scoped MCP configs (
.vscode/mcp.json) let you commit server configurations to your repository, ensuring the entire team shares the same tool access - —
Copilot's Agent mode integrates MCP tools seamlessly with file editing, terminal commands, and workspace search in a single agentic loop
- —
GitHub's enterprise compliance and audit features extend to MCP tool usage, providing visibility into how AI interacts with external services

Frequently asked questions
Can my AI agent help me enforce metadata compliance across my Canto digital assets?
Yes. You can instruct your AI to search for assets matching specific parameters or lacking required EXIF data, and automatically apply bulk updates to those customFields using the update metadata tool. Marketing teams use this to standardize their entire unstructured media library inside Canto in seconds.
Am I able to restructure my Canto hierarchy without using the web application?
Absolutely. Ask your agent to list your current folders and albums, and you can map out a totally new structure. The agent can dynamically create new folders and albums, and immediately assign existing media to these new groupings via the API, preventing any orphaned storage scenarios.
Can the agent search for specific imagery based on broad keywords quickly?
Yes, the AI uses Canto's global asset search to bypass manual navigation loops. It can query across boundaries to pull up exactly the campaign shots or product imagery you need. You can then request the deep metadata details of any returned image directly through the conversation.
Which VS Code version supports MCP?
MCP support requires VS Code 1.99 or later with the GitHub Copilot extension. Ensure both are updated to the latest version. Older versions of Copilot may not expose the Agent mode toggle.
How do I switch to Agent mode?
Open the Copilot Chat panel and look for two mode options: "Ask" and "Agent". Click "Agent" to enable autonomous tool calling. In Ask mode, Copilot provides conversational answers but cannot invoke MCP tools.
Can I restrict which MCP tools Copilot can access?
Yes. VS Code shows a tool consent dialog before any MCP tool is invoked for the first time. You can also configure tool access policies at the organization level through GitHub Copilot settings.
Does MCP work in VS Code Remote or Codespaces?
Yes. MCP servers configured via .vscode/mcp.json work in Remote SSH, WSL, and GitHub Codespaces environments. The MCP connection is established from the remote host, so ensure the server URL is accessible from that environment.
MCP tools not available
Ensure you are in Agent mode in Copilot Chat. MCP tools only appear in Agent mode.
