What is the NCDC Climate Data Online MCP Server?
Connect to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) API through your AI agent and explore a vast archive of authoritative historical weather and climate data using natural conversation.
What you can do
- Dataset Discovery — List and inspect available climate datasets like GHCND (Daily Summaries) and GSOD (Global Summary of the Day).
- Climate Records — Fetch actual data records for specific locations and date ranges, including temperature and precipitation.
- Station Lookup — Locate weather stations globally and retrieve their complete metadata and coverage info.
- Location Intelligence — Browse location categories and specific IDs (Cities, Countries, States) to filter your data queries.
- Categorical Analysis — List high-level data categories and specific types (Max Temp, Snowfall) available in the system.
- Temporal Flexibility — Access data classes ranging from hourly to monthly summaries.
How it works
- Subscribe to this server
- Enter your NCDC (NOAA) API Token (get one for free at ncdc.noaa.gov/cdo-web/token)
- Start exploring historical climate data from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP client
Who is this for?
- Researchers & Scientists — quickly retrieve historical weather data for climate modeling or environmental studies.
- Data Analysts — automate the gathering of weather trends for agricultural, energy, or insurance reporting.
- Educators — access authoritative public data for classroom projects and climate education.

Why Cursor?
Cursor's Agent mode turns NCDC Climate Data Online into an in-editor superpower. Ask Cursor to generate code using live data from NCDC Climate Data Online and it fetches, processes, and writes. all in a single agentic loop. 10 tools appear alongside file editing and terminal access, creating a unified development environment grounded in real-time information.
- —
Agent mode turns Cursor into an autonomous coding assistant that can read files, run commands, and call MCP tools without switching context
- —
Cursor's Composer feature can generate entire files using real-time data fetched through MCP. no copy-pasting from external dashboards
- —
MCP tools appear alongside built-in tools like file reading and terminal access, creating a unified agentic environment
- —
VS Code extension compatibility means your existing workflow, keybindings, and extensions all work alongside MCP tools

Frequently asked questions
Is the NCDC API Token free?
Yes! You can request a free API token by providing your email address at https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cdo-web/token.
What is the GHCND dataset?
GHCND stands for Global Historical Climatology Network - Daily. It is one of the most popular datasets, providing daily climate summaries (temperature, precipitation, etc.) from stations around the world.
How far back does the data go?
NCDC archives contain data dating back to the 18th century for some locations, though the availability varies significantly by station and dataset.
What is Agent mode and why does it matter for MCP?
Agent mode is Cursor's autonomous execution mode where the AI can perform multi-step tasks: reading files, editing code, running terminal commands, and calling MCP tools. Without Agent mode, Cursor operates in a simpler ask-and-answer mode that doesn't support tool calling. Always ensure you're in Agent mode when working with MCP servers.
Where does Cursor store MCP configuration?
Cursor looks for MCP server configurations in a mcp.json file. You can configure servers at the project level (.cursor/mcp.json in your project root) or globally (~/.cursor/mcp.json). Project-level configs take precedence.
Can Cursor use MCP tools in inline edits?
No. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode through the chat panel. Inline completions and Tab suggestions do not trigger MCP tool calls. This is by design. tool calls require user visibility and approval.
How do I verify MCP tools are loaded?
Open Settings → Features → MCP and look for your server name. A green indicator means the server is connected. You can also check Agent mode's available tools by clicking the tools dropdown in the chat panel.
Tools not appearing in Cursor
Ensure you are in Agent mode (not Ask mode). MCP tools only work in Agent mode.
