What is the Notion MCP Server?

Unlock the full potential of your connected workspace by linking Notion to your AI agent. This integration transforms Notion from a static documentation hub into a dynamic, queryable engine for your AI workflows. Your agent can now perform global fuzzy searches to locate misplaced documents, query structured databases to extract tabular data, and even read deep into nested block hierarchies to summarize project specs or meeting notes. Whether you're automating task creation or retrieving team knowledge, your agent acts as an intelligent librarian for your entire Notion domain.

What you can do

  • Global Search — Rapidly find pages and databases across your workspace by title or content using fuzzy text matching.
  • Database Orchestration — Query databases to read structured data rows or fetch the exact schema defining your trackers.
  • Deep Content Reading — Access metadata and dive into nested paragraphs, lists, and images using advanced block retrieval.
  • Record Creation — Programmatically create new pages or insert data rows directly inside specific Notion containers.
  • Identity Mapping — Enumerate all workspace users and bots to accurately map assignee tags to team members.

How it works

  1. Subscribe to this server
  2. Enter your Notion Internal Integration Secret
  3. Start querying your company wiki and project trackers from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible client

Who is this for?

  • Productivity Experts — quickly search the internal wiki, read deep project specs, and append notes to central databases.
  • Software Teams — query central sprint trackers and create new tasks without ever leaving your development environment.
  • Ops Managers — build automated AI reporting flows by safely reading the real-time state of active rows and users.
  • Knowledge Workers — retrieve specific documentation fragments instantly through natural language conversation.

Why VS Code Copilot?

GitHub Copilot Agent mode brings Notion data directly into your VS Code workflow. With a project-scoped config, the entire team shares access to 10 tools. Copilot queries live data, generates typed code, and writes tests from actual API responses, all without leaving the editor.

  • VS Code is used by over 70% of developers. adding MCP tools to Copilot means your team can leverage external data without leaving their primary editor

  • Project-scoped MCP configs (.vscode/mcp.json) let you commit server configurations to your repository, ensuring the entire team shares the same tool access

  • Copilot's Agent mode integrates MCP tools seamlessly with file editing, terminal commands, and workspace search in a single agentic loop

  • GitHub's enterprise compliance and audit features extend to MCP tool usage, providing visibility into how AI interacts with external services

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

Can my AI automatically create task assignments?

Yes. Your agent can pull the exact schema of your tracker database, retrieve the user UUIDs via list_users, and seamlessly insert a new row assigning the task—all within seconds.

02

How do I extract long notes from a page?

While get_page gives you raw page metadata, your agent will use get_blocks to traverse paragraphs, lists, and images to stream the entire document context back into your chat workflow.

03

Does it support deep searches?

Absolutely. It leverages multiple endpoints like search_pages and search_databases globally so your agent can track down any missing document UUID using just a textual query snippet.

04

Which VS Code version supports MCP?

MCP support requires VS Code 1.99 or later with the GitHub Copilot extension. Ensure both are updated to the latest version. Older versions of Copilot may not expose the Agent mode toggle.

05

How do I switch to Agent mode?

Open the Copilot Chat panel and look for two mode options: "Ask" and "Agent". Click "Agent" to enable autonomous tool calling. In Ask mode, Copilot provides conversational answers but cannot invoke MCP tools.

06

Can I restrict which MCP tools Copilot can access?

Yes. VS Code shows a tool consent dialog before any MCP tool is invoked for the first time. You can also configure tool access policies at the organization level through GitHub Copilot settings.

07

Does MCP work in VS Code Remote or Codespaces?

Yes. MCP servers configured via .vscode/mcp.json work in Remote SSH, WSL, and GitHub Codespaces environments. The MCP connection is established from the remote host, so ensure the server URL is accessible from that environment.

08

MCP tools not available

Ensure you are in Agent mode in Copilot Chat. MCP tools only appear in Agent mode.
